Detroit Officer Joins Zoom Court Hearing Pants-Free
Let’s get right down to the bare details: if you’re appearing in court — even on Zoom — you need to be wearing proper attire. A Detroit police officer learned that lesson the hard way after getting busted for not wearing pants during a recent court appearance.
Pantsless Officer Shows up in Court
The wardrobe malfunction happened Monday (Oct. 27) in Judge Sean Perkins’ virtual courtroom at Detroit’s 36th District Court. Perkins seems to have a knack for going viral after calling out people who show up less than courtroom-ready. Remember the mom who got booted for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on camera? You can see that clip here.
The officer, who identified himself as Officer Mathew Jackson from the Detroit Police Department, made the virtual appearance wearing just his uniform shirt, badge, and — as it appears — boxers. Jackson held the camera a little too low, revealing his secret to the court.
At one point, Judge Perkins accidentally addressed Jackson as “Cuz” before correcting himself.
“You got some pants on, cuz—officer?” Perkins asked.
Jackson quickly shifted the camera angle so only his upper torso was visible. After a brief pause, he replied simply, “No.”
Department response:
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison told WJBK-TV that Jackson’s appearance did not meet the department’s standards.
“The involved officer’s actions are not representative of the professionalism of this department and will be appropriately addressed to maintain the public’s confidence and efficient operation of this department.”
You can watch the exchange in the video below from WJBK-TV.
