Is it illegal to declaw your cat in the state of Michigan?

The Debate

This has been a debate within the state for a while now, according to Arew.

The issue of declawing cats has been a controversial topic for many years. Some people argue that declawing is necessary to protect furniture and avoid scratching injuries, while others believe it is a cruel and unnecessary practice that can cause both physical and behavioral problems.

As a cat lover, I would have to agree with the latter. While I understand it is quite annoying to have war wounds from the scratches or to have scratches all over your furniture, it is still not okay to hurt any animal, including your furry family members.

Plus, their claws are extremely important for cats.

They rely on their claws for defense, hunting, and climbing, and removing them can cause significant pain and distress. As with any medical procedure, it's essential to consider the risks and benefits carefully before making a decision.

Is It Legal To Declaw Your Cat In Michigan?

Well, it seems like the answer is a little complicated. There are reports that they did ban it in 2019, according to Arew.

However, a recent article from Fox 2 Detroit mentions that is still being considered by the Michigan House of Representatives.

House Bill 4674 would amend the state's Public Health Code to regulate certain surgical procedures performed on cats, specifically, the act of declawing them.

That bill would prohibit all veterinarians from declawing cats. It would also ban any partial or complete declawing operation or anything that tampers with the normal function of the cat's claws, toes, or paws.

If Michigan does pass this, Michigan would join New York and Maryland, which are the only two states that have a ban on declawing cats.

Do you think Michigan will make it illegal to declaw cats?
