Consumers Energy customers are contacted by phone and told that they must pay their bill within an hour's time. The caller can speak English or Spanish and tells the customer to purchase a "Green Dot" prepaid credit card from a local drug store or supermarket. The intended target is then directed to call an 866 toll-free phone number to pay their energy bill with that card.

"Our customers should know that Consumers Energy never demands payment over the phone using only a Green Dot card." the company said in a statement.
