Big Lots is Slowly Coming Back to Life in Michigan

Although business ground to a screeching halt in 2024 for Big Lots, the last chapter for the discount retailer has yet to be written.

Big Lots has announced that five locations in Michigan will soon reopen, albeit under new management and ownership.

Sweeping Changes for Big Lots Stores

Beginning in 2023, Big Lots began closing stores in California and Colorado. With those closures came speculation that the discount chain would be shuttering more locations, and Big Lots soon announced that it would be closing stores in urban areas to focus on stores in smaller cities.

In July 2024, as Big Lots announced that more locations would be closed, Michigan's 46 stores appeared to be safe. However, that news changed in the fall when the company would be closing 11 Michigan locations.

By December of last year, things took a turn for the worse, and Big Lots announced that all of its US locations would be closing, including more than 30 stores still open in Michigan.

Big Lots Gets a New Lease on Life

In the 11th hour, on December 27, 2024, the company announced that hundreds of stores would be saved, as an agreement with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, LLC had been reached.

While most Big Lots locations have been permanently closed, hundreds of locations - including five here in Michigan - are set to re-open soon.

What Michigan Big Lots Locations Are Slated to Reopen?

We spoke with representatives from three of the five Michigan Big Lots stores that are planning to reopen soon. While those representatives weren't able to give exact opening dates for their stores, they provided an estimated target date for these stores to reopen for business.
