After the racial tensions over the last week, alumni of the school wanted to do something to encourage positivity.

It's been a tough couple of weeks at Bay City Western High School. First, there were Confederate flags being flown near the high school. And then, a Snapchat surfaced of a student using racial slurs. And Western alumni were NOT happy about their former school being portrayed in this light, especially in the year 2018.

So, on Monday, during a peaceful rally for positivity, a new scholarship was announced for students who “promote positive race relations, strength through diversity and social justice." This is the first year that the scholarship will be awarded.

Whether or not you believe that flying the Confederate flag is free speech or racism, you can't argue with a scholarship for students who do positive things in the community.
