Michigan Shoppers: Are You Owed Money in Amazon Prime Refund Settlement?
Michigan Amazon Prime subscribers may be entitled to a refund as part of a nationwide settlement, following allegations that the retail giant made it too easy for customers to enroll in Prime but too difficult to cancel.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said Amazon “used sophisticated subscription traps” to trick customers into signing up for Prime. According to CNN, the online giant allegedly manipulated shoppers into enrolling and then made it difficult for subscribers to cancel.
About $1.5 billion of the $2.5 billion settlement will be refunded directly to customers.
Are You Eligible for a Refund?
If you signed up for an Amazon Prime account or unsuccessfully attempted to cancel your subscription in the U.S. between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, you may be eligible for a refund.
Customers who became Prime subscribers through a “challenged enrollment flow” and used no more than three Prime benefits within one year of enrollment will receive an automatic refund. Refunds are capped at $51.
How to File a Claim With Amazon
Those not granted automatic refunds will have the opportunity to file a claim. The process will begin within 30 days after the automatic refund process is completed.
Has Amazon Admitted Any Wrongdoing?
Amazon and its executives stated that they have always followed the law and aim to make signing up for and cancelling Prime clear and simple.
