All Michigan Workers Could be Entitled to Sick Leave if New Legislation Passes
Michigan House and Senate Democrats want to see everyone in Michigan get paid sick leave.
Yesterday House and Senate Democrats introduced legislation that would grant all Michigan workers one hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked. It would no longer matter if you work full-time or part-time.
NBC 25 reports that according to a study in 2016, 44 percent of Michigan workers said they cannot take time off if they or their family becomes ill. I think we can all agree if a co-worker comes into the office sick, it is only a matter of time before the illness spreads throughout the whole building. If everyone could just take a day of two to fight off illness, I think we would all stay healthier throughout the year.
There are five other states that have similar laws, Connecticut, California, Massachusetts, Oregon and Vermont. Though the majority of Michigan workers support paid sick leave, Senate Majority Leader Jim Ananich, says he will seek bipartisan support but the legislation is unlikely to gain traction in the GOP-controlled Legislature.
