Look Inside President Ford’s Adorable Summer Cabin in Michigan
Before he became the 38th president of the United States, Gerald Ford spent many relaxing summers in Michigan, some of which were spent in this cute cottage on Michigan's west side.
This adorable three-bedroom, two-bathroom cottage was built sometime in the early 1900s, and while it has since certainly seen many updates it also features a lot of the original woodwork and hardwood flooring. It's about 900 square feet and the current owners are asking $475,000.
Ford Family Summers
In the late 1800s, the surrounding area was home to two hotels, Hotel Ottawa and the Ottawa Beach Hotel. Many cottages and cabins were built in the area, forming a neighborhood oasis that was a highly sought-after vacation destination just outside of Holland.
During his childhood, Ford's parents bought nearby property, and according to Crain's Detroit Business, sold that property and purchased this vacation home located at 2325 Auburn Ave.
During his term in Congress representing Kent and Ottawa Counties, Ford, his brothers, and their wives shared the cabin, taking turns using it as their summer vacation spot through the 1960s.
A Rich History and Plenty of Renovations
The current owners tell Crain's that they purchased the property in 2011. It had sat empty for many years and was very rundown.
They replaced the roof, added a concrete driveway, restored the original windows, and refurbished the original hardwood flooring. They remodeled the kitchen and added a second bathroom, laundry machines, and an electric fireplace.
