We're bracing for another snowstorm this week in Mid-Michigan. With just a few inches on the ground during the last one, schools and businesses still shut down. With more than six inches expected Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning, more closings are to be expected.

But we would have to reach at least 9.5 inches to at least tie at the very bottom of Flint's current record list. So how much snow have we been left with after some of the worst blizzards we've faced? Surprisingly, more than I thought.

Between March 16th and 17th in 1973 Flint was hit with a snowstorm that generated 13.7 inches or accumulation. That is number five on the list, while number four goes to the snowstorm that left 14 inches on the ground between December 11th and 12 in 2000.

In at number three the total jumps to 17.1 inches for a blizzard that covered the area between January 4th and 5th in 2014. The second largest snowstorm to hit the area happened between April 2nd and 3rd 1975 in which the storm dropped 17.3 inches on Flint.

That brings us to the biggest blizzard to date that slammed Flint and Genesee County. Between January 26th and 27th of 1967, Flint was pounded with a whopping 22.7 inches of snow. That's almost two feet in a single storm!

Some may wonder why the infamous Blizzard of '78 isn't on this list, and that is simple. That storm did drop 22 inches in Saginaw and a monstrous 30 inches in Muskegon. But Flint dodged the bullet with only 9 inches on the ground when all was said and done.

Blizzard of 1978: When Mother Nature's Fury Shut Down Michigan

The Blizzard of 1978 was an iconic storm system made possible by two converging fronts, one from the Gulf of Mexico, meeting a northern system from Canada creating record snowfall and hurricane-force winds that shutdown Michigan's transportation system, both on the ground and in the air. Here's a look at WOOD TV 8's coverage from January 25th through January 27th, 1978.
