I want a recount. There is no way the Michiganders aren't sucking down more caffeine than any other state in the country. Ok, maybe not the most, but to be listed as one of the states that consumes the least amount? Yeah, no.

I can handle the fact the America itself only ranks 22nd when it come to coffee consumption in the world. The U.S. came in with a 3.1 kg per capita in a recent study. Apparently Finland goes hard core on drinking the "joe" with a whopping 9.6 kg per capita. Still, when it comes to all caffeine I would have bet my Starbucks card that Michigan would have rallied big.

How did they determine the most caffeinated states?

Zippia took on the task of finding which states in the country need to fuel up the most throughout the day. According to their website they took in consideration 3 main factors.

1. The average cups of coffee drank daily in each state
2. Percent of residents who drink soda/sugary juices daily
3. Google searches for “coffee near me”

How caffeinated is Michigan?

According to the study, not very. Michigan actually found itself on the less glamorous "Least Caffeinated States" list. Coming in at #10, they shared company with New York, Pennsylvania, and the mellow state (coming in first) of Delaware.

What state just can't get enough "fuel"?

The joke is that the east coast "runs on Duncan Donuts", and it looks like that could be true. Residents of Vermont seem to rely on caffeine to make it through the day more than anyone. The state claimed the top spot for relying on the java and those caffeinated sodas to get the job done. Vermont was in company from coast to coast with the top ten shaping up as follows:

  1. Vermont
  2. Arizona
  3. Colorado
  4. New Mexico
  5. Hawaii
  6. Idaho
  7. Rhode Island
  8. Oregon
  9. Kansas
  10. Iowa

Don't you just love those quirky facts?

The study had some interesting finds as well. How residents get their caffeine varies from state to state. On average New Mexico residents drink 2.4 cups of coffee a day- more than anywhere else, but in Mississippi goes a different route. Seems 48% of Mississippians drink a soda or sugary juice every day.

Well fellow Michiganders, the study may differ from reality, but as I sit here in that  line from hell at Starbucks, I still think we need a recount.
