Therapy Dogs Are Helping Inmates in Lapeer – The Good News [VIDEO]
This is the second year that the therapy dogs have been brought to the prison.
The rescue dogs come from Stiggy's Dogs, a non-profit that trains service dogs for veterans with PTSDS, , traumatic brain injuries and other disabilities. The dogs have been coming to the prison for two years, and this is the only program of its type in Michigan.
The inmates help to train the animals to do tasks for their future owners, like fetching items for vets in wheelchairs or deep pressure therapy to help with PTSD.
Counselors at the prison say that a lot of these prisoners never see compassion, and this helps THEM as well as saves money on training for the state.
Love this so much. We sometimes forget that prison, in a lot of cases, is meant to rehab prisoners.
