Community Grieves as Local District Responds to Student’s Sudden Death
Parents in the Swartz Creek Community Schools district received heartbreaking news this morning: a sixth-grade student has passed away, prompting an outpouring of grief and a swift response from school officials.
Swartz Creek Schools’ Response to the Loss
In a letter sent to families Friday morning (5/23) and posted on the school's Facebook page, Superintendent Rodney Hetherton acknowledged the “tragic loss” and expressed condolences on behalf of the school community.
“One of our 6th-grade students passed away last night,” Hetherton wrote. “To respect the student's and their family's privacy, we will not be releasing the student's name or any further details at this time.”
The superintendent emphasized the emotional toll of the loss, urging families to support one another and lean on available mental health resources.
“Our top priority is the emotional well-being of our students and staff,” the letter reads. “Grief counselors and support personnel are available at Swartz Creek Middle School for anyone in need.”
How Families Can Support Children Through Grief
Families are encouraged to talk openly with their children using age appropriate language and to reach out to school counselors, social workers, or principals if additional support is needed.
“Our school community is strongest when we come together with compassion and care for one another,” Hetherton added. “Please keep the student’s family in your thoughts and prayers.”
