Update (9/18): The video for Sam Smith's latest is now out, and just as moody as you'd expect — check it out.

Sam Smith's back! But, oh, he's leaving again.

The "Writing's on the Wall" singer, who's been teasing a comeback for weeks, is finally back in action today (September 8) with the release of "Too Good at Goodbyes," and it's your new preferred soul-tinged breakup anthem.

"I know you're thinking I'm heartless, I know you're thinking I'm cold / I'm just protecting my innocence, I'm just protecting my soul," Smith warns over delicate verses that erupt into choir-backed tell-offs at the chorus' pass.

Smith confirmed in a tweet in August that he was ready to release new music.

“First of all I want to say thank you,” he noted.. “Thank you for being so patient and for letting me have the past year to really escape into my mind & write music so freely. I feel so rejuvenated and have so many stories I can’t wait to tell you.”

In July, Smith gave fans the impression a comeback was looming when he posted a series of photos to Twitter that seemed to indicate he was shooting a music video. That he was with music video directors Luke Monaghan and James Barber seemed to provide some compelling evidence.
