Pre-Cut Melon the Cause of Multi-State Salmonella Outbreak
The latest multi-state Salmonella outbreak has been linked to pre-cut melon produced by Caito Foods in Indiana. The products have been distributed to eight states, including Michigan.
The CDC has recalled fresh cut watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, and fresh cut fruit melody products. According to WNEM, at least 60 people have become ill from these products, 32 of those people are in Michigan. According to the CDC, 31 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.
Most of the people affected said they purchased the pre-cut fruit from Kroger or Walmart stores. However, the products were also sold at Costco, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, among other stores.
If you purchased pre-cut melon from a Walmart or Kroger store you should throw it away to be safe. The warning from the CDC only applies to these specific pre-cut melon products, and not whole melons or other pre-cut fruit.
