A former police officer in Akron, Ohio has been sentenced to two years probation after stealing more than $26,000 from the 'Shop With a Cop' program he coordinated.

Probation? Seriously?

Investigators say Michael Simmons improperly spent $26,709 on sporting event tickets, electronics, clothing, tools, and gift cards for his own personal use. He pleaded guilty to grand theft in October.

WOIO reports that Simmons was given an 18-month suspended sentence, 2 years probation, 500 hours of community service and has to pay $15,000 in restitution.

The Shop With a Cop Program gives children from disadvantage families an opportunity to shop with police officers during the holiday season.
