
Michigan is Getting a New, Used Nuclear Power Plant
A shuttered nuclear power plant in Michigan is getting new life and is expected to go back online next year. The reboot of the West Michigan plant is said to be the first reactor restart in US history, according to the Department of Energy.
Michigan Nuclear Power Plant to Resume Operation in 2025
According to WILX-TV, the Palisades Nuclear Plant in Covert has secured a loan for $1.5 billion which will be used to restart operations at the shuttered plant. Covert Township is located near the shore of Lake Michigan in Van Buren County, about 10 miles south of South Haven.
The announcement came Monday (9/30) morning from the Department of Energy with a footnote that resuming operations at the currently-defunct power plant would be a historic move.

The plant is currently owned by Holtec International, which projects that the plant will be back online by October 2025.
Reopening the plant is expected to create or retain up to 600 jobs in West Michigan.
History of Michigan's Shuttered Nuclear Power Plant
According to the plant's Wiki page, Palisades Nuclear Power Plant was built between 1967 at 1970 and began operating at full power in 1973.
The plant changed hands during the early 2000s and again in 2022. It ceased operation in May 2022 about one month before its sale to Holtec International was completed.
Since its closure more than two years ago, Holtec International has been working to obtain funds in order to reboot the plant.
