Many large stores like Meijer and Wal-Mart are relying on back-up generators to keep their inventories safe. But apparently that is not enough.

Power Outage Cripples Michigan Grocery Stores

While general merchandise and non-perishable items at Michigan stores like Meijer, Target and Wal-Mart, the problem these mega-chains are having is keeping their refrigerated and frozen items at the correct temperatures.

The Meijer on Hill Road in Mundy Township has signs up informing patrons that certain areas have been restricted due to the power outages.

Smaller Michigan Businesses Face Larger Impacts From Power Outages

Mom & Pop stores are all over the state. And for those without generators to keep their inventory at correct temperatures, they are facing significant losses.

While some of the major businesses can operate on half-power or with the luxury of a back-up generator, many Michigan businesses are at the mercy of the local power companies restoring power to their climate control systems, such as walk-in freezers and refrigerators.

According to the National Weather Service it will take a day or two to determine if Michigan actually experienced tornadic events and exactly how many.

Residents in Argentine Township are still contending with a road closure at South Seymour and Lahring Roads that was reported at 1:05 this morning. Remember to avoid downed power lines and treat non-functioning or malfunctioning traffic lights as four-way stop.
