When the rest of the world thinks of Michigan they probably don't think Sand Dunes even though Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is considered one of the most beautiful places on earth and is recognized annually as one of the world's best destinations.  The Dunes that populate the west Michigan lakeshore are expansive and certainly provide enough of that particular ecosystem.  We can all agree we have what we need.

But what if I told you there were more sand dunes than originally thought?  Then, what if I told you there were TWICE as many than we thought!  According to a piece on interlochenpublicradio.org, a researcher map from the 80s only accounted for large dunes like the ones along the lakeshore.  A new map shows there are over 230,000 acres in the state of Michigan.  Over half are on public land and the rest fall under private ownership.  You might want to check your backyard!!!
