Mid-Michigan Gas Fees Based On Miles Driven..Could Be On The Way [VIDEO]

If you drive more you pay more. It's all about money to fix the roads.

Here's what's going on. Michigan drivers are using noticeably less gasoline. Because of better vehicle fuel economy. That translates into less tax money for the State of Michigan. That translates into less money to repair and maintain Michigan roads.

You do remember that there is tax built into every gallon of gas sold in Michigan earmarked for road projects. Here's what Lansing is thinking about doing. We would be one of the first states in the nation to do this.

Moving Michigan to a system where motorists pay a fee based on the number of miles they drive, according to a University of Michigan report released yesterday, instead of continuing to raise fuel taxes to pay for transportation.

A mileage fee could more fairly allocate costs based on the number of miles driven, the time of day, the route taken, and the weight of the vehicle. Privacy could turn out to be the biggest issue..'Big Brother' knowing how much you drive upsets a lot of people.
