How You Can Beat Michigan’s Egg Price Surge
Inflation has been running rampant lately. Just take a look at an old grocery receipt from the last ten years or so, then look at prices today and the sticker shock will hit you instantly. Eggs have also become almost unaffordable with the cheapest price statewide currently $4.59 per dozen at Kroger.
For perspective, the average price for a dozen was only $1.93 in 2014, but it jumped 54% in 2015 due to a bird flu outbreak. However, by January of 2022 a dozen would revert to $1.93.
While Michigan produces over 4 billion eggs annually, we're picking up the slack of the national supply shortage. So why not lay your own eggs at home?
Many Michigan cities and towns allow backyard chickens so residents can have as many fresh eggs as their chickens will lay. Fenton joined the statewide list in 2012. Like some other chicken-friendly communities, Fenton does have limitations including the number of chickens, absolutely no roosters and a permit is required.
Burton is going on 15 years of backyard chickens, but since they implemented the ordinance in 2010 only nine permits have been issued.
Other communities in Mid-Michigan that allow backyard chickens include Linden, Clio, Burton, Flushing, Holly, and Mundy Township. However Flint is one of the cities not on the list.
I know of several people who have chickens. In fact, my neighbor has a bunch of chickens out back and she is constantly giving away eggs because she can't keep up with them. What a terrible problem to have amidst 2025's egg price surge.
Check with your local city or township hall to see if you can have chickens. lay your own eggs and start saving money!
