The Netflix drama Unknown Number stunned viewers with the shocking story of Shawn Licari, his wife Kendra, and their teenage daughter Lauryn. The catfishing scandal that rocked a small town in Michigan captivated audiences in Michigan and beyond, and quickly became a national talking point.

The Beal City Cyberbullying Scandal

The Netflix documentary, released August 29, examines a bizarre cyberbullying scandal in the small town of Beal City. It began when Lauryn Licari and her boyfriend, Owen McKenny, started receiving threatening and sometimes profane text messages — as many as 40 or 50 a day — from a string of unknown numbers. The harassment dragged on for nearly two years before the FBI uncovered the shocking truth in August 2022: the person behind the campaign was Lauryn’s own mother, and Shawn’s wife, Kendra Licari.

But what’s happened to the Licari family in the years since the cameras stopped rolling?

Shawn Licari, who found himself caught in the middle of the scandal, has focused on rebuilding a sense of normalcy for himself and his daughter, Lauryn. He has concentrated on his career and staying out of the public spotlight while supporting Lauryn through the aftermath of the events that brought the family national attention.

Are Shawn and Kendra Licari Still Married?

After Kendra’s arrest in December 2022, Shawn filed for divorce and was awarded full custody of Lauryn, according to People. Reflecting on the ordeal, he told the documentary, "I just can't believe she would do something like that to her daughter that supposedly she loved dearly. Just makes me sick. She stabbed me in the heart — shot me in the heart — and threw it away."

Kendra Licari: Legal Consequences and Current Life

Kendra pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor and was sentenced to 19 months to five years in prison, according to Up North Live. She was released in August 2024 and is currently living with family in the Detroit area.

As part of the court’s orders, Kendra and Lauryn are currently not allowed to have contact with one another.
