TVs, radios, cable stations, cell phones, and community sirens - Many of these devices will be taken over and activated this Wednesday.

While participation is voluntary, many Michigan counties will be taking part in a statewide tornado drill on March 19 at 1:00 pm.

Michigan Statewide Tornado Drill

This is only a test. You've no doubt heard these on local TV and radio stations, but this week's test will be much broader.

The test that's conducted this week is actually a 'coordinated test' meaning radio, TV, and cable TV stations will conduct the test at roughly the same time. While this test is mandated for all broadcast stations in our state, participation by some other agencies is voluntary.

If your county has opted in, you will likely get a loud signal alert on your cell phone and your community's tornado sirens will sound, much like they do on the first Saturday of each month.

Why is This Test Tone So Loud and Obnoxious?

Think of the last time you received an amber alert or a statewide (or nationwide) alert on your phone. It got your attention, right? This system is designed to quickly get your attention so you'll give your undivided attention to the alert or drill that's taking place.

This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week (March 16 - 22). It's a great time to make sure you and your family know what to do in the event of a tornado or other severe weather here in Michigan.

While tornadoes can occur at any time during the year, they are much more common during the late spring and early summer months.

Michigan Statewide Tornado Drill Scheduled

Remember, the statewide coordinated test/tornado drill is Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at approximately 1:00 pm. It's a good idea to make sure you and your family members know what to do if they're at home, work, school, or driving in a car.

Inside the $5.9M Cedar-Clad 'Boardwalk Cottage' on Mackinac Island

This is everything you thought it would be - and more. If you have strolled the whimsical streets of Mackinac Island not far from downtown, you have surely seen the "Boardwalk Cottage". The unique cedar-clad home is a standout for its design and beauty, and it's no wonder considering who owns the home. The home was built in the 1980s by the McIntire family, the previous owners of The Hotel Iroquois on the island for over 65 years. Much like the hotel that they brought to a legendary stage, the 4200 square foot home is considered one the island's finest.

Inside the home, you will find three bedrooms, each with its own sitting area, walk-in closet, and private bath, each overlooking the Straits of Mackinac. The first-floor master suite will have you waking up with spectacular views of Lake Huron. The outside offers amazing space for entertaining and just taking in all the beauty the home is surrounded by.

Take a look inside.
