Are You Surprised? Michigan is the Top Weed Market in the US
The US state with the highest per capita weed sales in the entire country. What is Michigan, Alex?
Michigan has overtaken California as the largest cannabis market in the US in terms of sales volume. California, however, still leads in terms of sales revenue, due to its much higher weed prices.
How Much Weed is Sold in Michigan?
Michigan is the state with the highest per capita sales of weed in America, at $132.41, according to data provided by Headset, a cannabis market intelligence firm. Michigan's per capita sales are about triple that of California, which is $44.21.
Since the end of 2022, Michigan has sold more units of marijuana than California, according to data provided by market intelligence firm BDSA. Units are defined as a single item that a customer buys, such as a pre-rolled joint, a multipack of pre-rolled joints, a package of gummies, or a jar of flower.
In May of 2024, Michigan consumers purchased 24.2 million units. Compare that with California, which sold 17.3 million units during the same time period, according to Insider Money.
Lower Prices Lead to More Stoners
Two important factors have led to Michigan overtaking California as the weed capital of the US: Taxation and the illegal market.
It's much cheaper to buy weed and marijuana products in Michigan. California's government collects a 15% excise tax on top of the state's sales taxes which range from 7.25% to 1075%, according to Crain's Detroit Business.
Higher costs for legal products on the West Coast lead to a great deal more black market weed sales.
