Michigan Residents Have Until Sept. 30 to Apply for Home Heating Credit
Staying warm this winter might be a little easier for some Michigan families. Michigan residents have until September 30 to apply for a home heating tax credit.
Earlier this year, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation that quintuples the Working Families Tax Credit which is estimated to benefit approximately 700,000 working families, putting about $3,150 back in their bank accounts.
"I urge families to apply for this credit so they can have more money in their pockets to pay the bills and put food on the table while keeping the heat on," Whitmer said.
Qualification Details
As with anything government-related, it's complicated. In order to qualify for the Home Heating Credit, residents must meet certain eligibility requirements.
First, you have to be a renter with a contract/lease or a homeowner who meets certain income requirements.
Additionally, you must meet all of the following eligibility requirements, as outlined on the MDHHS website:
- You were not a full-time student who was claimed as a dependent on another person's return.
- You did not live in college or university housing for the entire year.
- You did not live in a licensed care facility for the entire year.
- Your income was within certain limits, outlined in this table (Table A) and this table (Table B).
The best way to apply for the credit is to have a qualified tax preparer complete form MI-1040CR-7. You download the form at this link and follow these instructions to see if you qualify.
Again, you must apply for the Michigan Home Heating Credit by September 30, 2023.
