Michigan’s March Menu: Weird, Strange, Awesome & Shocking
Michigan has so much to offer like originals such as Faygo, Vernor's, Koegel's and Better Made Chips. But we also provide visitors and locals with amazing scenery, vacation spots, sports teams and cuisine. But we wouldn't be able to pull it off without the amazing and awesome people that settled here and made this state so great.
There are people from all over the world who have settled in Michigan since it was established. If you've ever been to the charming and delightful town of Frankenmuth you can see the German influence from the architecture to the business names. Even nationwide chains like McDonald's are required to conform to the local ordinances so it blends in with the rest of the community.
The fact that you can experience so much world culture right here in Michigan is pretty awesome in itself. But with all of the various cultures throughout the state and many holidays and religious seasons overlapping, Michiganders all over the state eat some strange things in March.
So between Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, St. Patrick's Day and Lent, a lot of strange eating habits have emerged over the decades and centuries. Many of them started in the country of their origins and were brought by early Michigan settlers, others evolved in America from their foreign origins and out of dire necessity, others started right here in Michigan.
Some of the items on our list below are simply obvious traditional favorites like Paczki and corned beef & cabbage. But when, if ever, have you had alligator or muskrat?
