Last year, the average household receiving the Home Heating Tax Credit received about $171 in assistance.

That money can help reduce the financial burden that comes with keeping a Michigan home warm during the fall and winter. Depending on the energy provider, some residents may also qualify for an additional monthly credit of up to $20.

Free tax preparation services are available to help qualifying residents claim the Home Heating Tax Credit. Michigan residents can call 211 to find assistance in their area or contact local nonprofit organizations and United Way offices for referrals.

With the September 30 deadline approaching, residents who believe they may qualify may want to start the process sooner rather than later. Michigan winters are expensive enough. If you qualify, this is one credit you probably do not want to leave sitting on the table.
