With coronavirus cases once again on the rise, Michigan will remain under a state of emergency through August 11, 2020. Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order that will extend the emergency and disaster declaration for nearly a month.

“COVID-19 has now killed more than 6,000 people in Michigan. That’s more than 6,000 of our parents, grandparents, friends, and neighbors. And the rising numbers we’ve seen over the past few weeks prove that this virus is still a very real threat in our state,” Governor Whitmer said in a statement. “Today, I signed new emergency and disaster declarations using independent sources of statutory authority to continue saving lives and ensure that the brave men and women on the front lines of this crisis have the tools they need.”

As of today, Michigan now has a reported 70,306 cases of COVID-19 in the state. More than 6,000 people in Michigan have died from the disease.

The executive order doesn't automatically mean increased restrictions to help mitigate the spread of coronavirus, but it does, however, allow Governor Whitmer to continue acting under emergency authority as allowed by Michigan law.

Governor Whitmer recently tightened mask restrictions in Michigan, requiring businesses to refuse service to customers who are not wearing masks in public buildings. That ruling went into effect yesterday (7/13).
