Michigan’s Lakeside Gem Named Best Historic Small Town in America

Every town has a story to tell, and some towns are so rich in history that the story just adds to the charm that makes a small town so special.

Something is amazing about towns across the country that show that history is alive and kicking, while seamlessly blending the old with the new so much so that USA Today wanted to celebrate the best of these quaint cities. As part of their annual USA Today 10Best Awards, they released the list of the Best Historic Small Towns.

"The United States has a fasinating history, and exploring the places which most affected it is much more fun than simply reading about it", USA Today said. 

Of the thousands and thousands of towns that fit the bill, their team and readers were able to narrow the list down to the 10 best from across the country. These towns were  "selected by an expert panel and voted as the best by readers — have small populations (fewer than 25,000 people) with big histories making them fun and affordable ways to dive into our nation's past".

Not only did one Michigan town make the list, but it also landed right at the top.

What Michigan town is Ranked Best Historic Small Town in America?

Ludington, Michigan beat out towns from all over the United States for the title of Best Historic Small Town in America. The Mason County town on the shores of Lake Michigan has always been special to Michiganders, and now the whole county is in on the secret.

"Building its economy on the lumber industry, Ludington continued to thrive as a shipping port, both by water and by train. Today, visitors come to explore Ludington's small-town charm, take advantage of its waterfront location for swimming, boating, and more, and shop at its many specialty shops and art galleries. Explore the town's past at Historic White Pine Village and the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum". USA Today wrote.
