Clothing Retailer With 14 Michigan Locations Now Expected to Close Locations by Year’s End
Despite a Christmas shopping season expected to be a winner for retailers this year, one major department store is ramping up its timeline to shutter stores.
As 2024 draws to an end, Macy's says it plans to close more stores than originally planned, with some locations closing their doors right after the holidays.
The update came from Macy's Chairman and CEO Tony Spring during a third-quarter call with investors last week.
Macy's Speeds Up Timeline for Store Closures
As reported earlier this year, Macy's announced a plan to close 150 stores by 2026 with 50 to 55 closures planned for 2024.
Macy's is now expecting to shutter roughly 65 locations by the end of 2024 with additional locations closing after the holidays.
Macy's in Michigan
According to the retailer's website, Macy's has 14 locations in Michigan including Flint, Saginaw, Okemos, Traverse City, and locations in the Grand Rapids and Metro Detroit areas.
Macy's has more than 470 stores in the US and its parent company Macy's, Inc. also operates 59 Bloomingdale's and 164 Bluemercury locations. The retailer has also opened about two dozen 'small format' Macy's stores, typically about one-fifth the size of their traditional stores.
It's unclear which - if any - Michigan locations will be closing by the end of 2024 or in 2025. Spring reiterated that the stores that will be slated to close are underperforming locations that were part of the original list of 150 or so stores that would be closing by 2026.
Macy's Delayed Earnings Call After Employee Hid $151M
Syracuse.com reports that Macy's third-quarter earnings report was delayed after a n employee hid more than $151 million in delivery expenses. Spring has stated that the employee's intention was to cover up a mistake, not to steal money from the company.
