Three Mackinaw City Hotels Accused of Tricking Guests Into Bookings at Closed Hotels
It's a classic case of bait and switch. Several Northern Michigan hotels are being accused of tricking travelers into booking rooms at closed facilities and then moving their reservations to hotels with fewer accommodations.
According to a filing issued by Attorney General Dana Nessel, customers were allowed to book rooms at facilities that had already been closed. Upon their arrival, they were moved to rooms that they did not select at nearby hotels.
The Notice of Intended Action (NIA) was filed against three properties:
- Beach House Hotel
- Crown Choice Inn & Suites
- Hamilton Inn Select Beachfront
The Crown Choice Inn & Suites is the hotel that drew national attention last year after a mother and her children were evicted from a room in the middle of the night, following a dustup with the hotel's desk clerk. That clerk was subsequently fired.
No Refunds Were Issued
Customer complaints indicated that they were denied refunds because canceling their stays would have fallen outside the hotels' 72-hour cancelation policies. Those complaints led to the investigation by the Attorney General's office.
"The refunds are denied even though the consumer was not made aware of the original hotel’s closure at any time prior to the consumer arriving in Mackinaw City," the NIA stated.
According to Fox 2, the properties have until February 18 to respond to the filing and take appropriate steps to correct the problems that have been cited.
