Even though they had the day off, quite a few local students used yesterday as a day of public service.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day yesterday, students from Grand Blanc West Middle School and the University of Michigan-Flint went out and took their free time to some community service.

The kids from Grand Blanc West Middle School went to the United Way of Genesee County to pack more than 12,000 meals for those who are struggling with hunger in our community.

Likewise, about 30 students from the University of Michigan-Flint headed to the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village and helped to paint, move furniture and clean up the building.

Way to go, everybody! Using the day exactly like Dr. King would've wanted.
