‘Let’s Make Miracles’ Radiothon 2020: The Sassack Family
One of the most giving families in the Grand Blanc community has had their share of hardships.
You probably already know the Sassack family - Scott is the owner of Great Harvest Bread Co. in Grand Blanc on Perry Road. And, while most small businesses struggled during the pandemic, Scott and his staff used this time to give back to the community by donating bread to food banks and the Salvation Army, bringing lunch to first responders and healthcare professionals, etc.
What you may not know about the Sassacks is that they've been touched by the Children's Miracle Network personally.
Scott's daughters, Rebekah and Gabi, are identical twins. One morning, Rebekah was running and experience pain in her ribs and pressure in her chest. She was taken to a local hospital, where it was diagnosed as pneumonia. Unfortunately, with her white blood cell count getting higher and higher, she was transferred to Hurley Children's Hospital.
Rebekah spent seven days at Hurley; she was turning septic and one of her lungs collapsed. "The nurses that took over, they just wrapped around us," said Gabi.
When she was finally sent home, she wasn't out of the woods - she was still on IV antibiotics through a pic line and breathing treatments. But her goal was to get home by Thanksgiving, and she did.
"It's just an amazing facility and a group of people and we appreciate everything they've done for us," said Scott.
