Michigan Man Picks the Worst Possible Home to Rob: A Trooper’s
A Lansing man definitely picked the wrong house to break into. It turned out to be the home of a Michigan State Police trooper and a Midland Police officer.
The Wrong House at the Wrong Time
According to the Midland County Sheriff’s Office, 46-year-old Nicholas Premo was arrested early Sunday morning after breaking into a home on North Coleman Road in Warren Township. Deputies say they were called around 12:16 a.m. for a home invasion in progress.
Caught by the Homeowners — Both Police Officers
Inside that house were two people Premo really didn’t want to meet, both law enforcement officers. Sheriff Scott Holzinger says the pair woke up when Premo broke into their bedroom. They quickly detained him in the garage and waited for deputies to arrive.
Despite spotting a state police cruiser parked in the garage, Premo reportedly went through with the break-in anyway. Investigators say he stole a Red Bull, stripped metal from a 2024 Mitsubishi, and damaged property before being taken into custody.
Facing Multiple Felony Charges
Premo was arraigned Monday before Midland County District Court Magistrate Gerald Ladwig. He faces multiple felony charges, including first-degree home invasion, breaking into a building with intent, and larceny of a building, along with several misdemeanors. Assistant Prosecutor Cody Holbrook put it plainly: 'He’s very lucky he wasn’t shot.'

During the hearing, Ladwig noted that Premo didn’t know his own phone number and claimed he was looking for gas when he broke into the property. Bond was set at $250,000, and Premo remains behind bars at the Midland County Jail. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for October 28 before Judge Michael Carpenter.
