The new Star Wars series has made a habit of bringing back beloved old characters for a nostalgia victory lap. Han Solo, Princess (General) Leia, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, C-3PO; they’ve all gotten to bask in the spotlight at least one more time. One of the few conspicuous absences among the returning heroes is Billy Dee Williams’ Lando Calrissian. But Star Wars: The Last Jedi is right around the corner. Could he show up there?

Uh, no. Director Rian Johnson told Entertainment Weekly that you should not hold your breath for Lando cameo in Last Jedi. Because then you’d suffocate. And die. Because he’s not in it.

More from Johnson to EW:

No, and I don’t want fans to get their hopes up. He’s not in the film and it was never really something that came up. I mean, I loved that character. It would have been fun to see him, but it’s just not something that ever really had a place in the story.

You will see Lando again onscreen, of course, just not in Billy Dee Williams form. Lando plays a major role in the upcoming Solo Han Solo film, where he’s portrayed by Atlanta’s Donald Glover. It’s not quite the same, but it’s as close as you’re going to get, at least until Episode IX from director J.J. Abrams in December of 2019. Help us, J.J.! You’re our only hope.
