It's the end of an era for cereal giant Kellogg. The company announced that they would be splitting into 3 companies, and moving its corporate headquarters out of Battle Creek, Michigan after 116 years.

The company made the announcement early Tuesday, June 21, on its website in a video message from Steve Cahillane, Kellogg Company's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. According to the announcement, Kellogg will separate its two businesses into three new, independent public companies. The plan will also see the separation of  its North American cereal and plant-based foods businesses.

What The Changes at Kellogg Will Look Like

As a shock to many, yet no surprise to some, Cahillane also announced the company will be announcing a new corporate  name in the coming months. For now they will be known as Global Snacking Co..

The company intends to separate its U.S., Canada, and Caribbean cereal company. No name has yet been announced for that division, and for now it will be known only as North America Cereal Co.. The announcement also indicated the plan to separate the plant-based food division at Kellogg with the working name for now being Plant Co.

The North America cereal company and plant company will remain headquartered in Battle Creek, while the snacking company will have dual campuses in Battle Creek and Chicago with corporate headquarters in Chicago.

"This is a major milestone in Kellogg's long and successful history. Throughout our 116 years of doing business we have been a company that has continually transformed, one that has shown the ability to adapt and evolve in a changing world. I believe this is exactly the type of step Mr. Kellogg himself would have taken to create tremendous opportunities for the business and our stakeholders", Cahillane said in the video.

Cahlillane indicated the spin-offs should be completed by the end of 2023, and the company will act as one until then.  W. K. launched the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company on February 19, 1906 taking on the current name of the Kellogg Company in 1922.
