Over the next few days, as Halloween approaches, we’ll see the same old question pop up on social media: 'How old is too old to trick-or-treat?' While most Michigan residents have a strong opinion on the topic, the answer isn't always clear-cut.

It's wild to see on social media how strongly some people feel about teenagers trick-or-treating. It's as if they have nothing better to concern themselves with than the 'proper age' for free candy.

It's always been my feeling that as long as teens are dressed up, embracing the holiday, and being respectful, there's absolutely nothing wrong with them going door to door for candy. I mean, there are worse things they could be doing with their time, that's for sure. They could be out causing trouble or just sitting in their rooms glued to their screens.

Let's talk about whether Michigan has any restrictions on trick-or-treating.

No Statewide Age Limit: Michigan doesn’t have any rules on trick-or-treating age limits, so it’s really up to each city or neighborhood to set their own guidelines. Some places might suggest an age cut-off, like 12 or 14, but these aren’t actual laws anyone’s enforcing.

Some cities in other states will actually slap kids with fines if they're caught trick-or-treating past a certain age. Imagine being handed a ticket just for going out to get some candy! Thankfully, Michigan’s pretty relaxed about it.

As long as it's not a creepy 43-year-old dude coming to your door asking for candy, you should be just fine this Halloween season.
