74 Years Ago Today, Michigan Experienced Its Warmest January
Michigan is living up to its typical January winter weather patterns this year. It's been nothing but cloudy, cold, snowy, wet, and depressing. We've barely experienced any sunshine this entire month.

Last year was a bit of an anomaly as we started the month with temps in the 40s and 50s. That's a big stretch from the single and negative digits we endured last week.
While it was a bit on the milder side, it wasn't what you would call "warm." However, that's exactly what you could say about a day 74 years ago today.
When Was Michigan's Warmest January?
Obviously, temps vary throughout the entire state. There can easily be a 20-degree difference between upper and lower Michigan. So, for this discussion, we'll just focus on Detroit's warmest temperature.
Extreme Weather Watch put a list of the highest temperatures ever recorded in January in Detroit, Michigan from 1948–2022. According to the site, the warmest January temperature in Detroit, Michigan history was 67°F which occurred on January 25, 1950.
While we're not sure about the rest of the month, the 67°F temperature on January 25, 1950, was enough to make it the warmest January on record in Detroit.
Michigan also saw 64°F on January 7, 2008, and 63°F on January 17 in 1952.
When Was Michigan's Coldest January?
On January 21, 1984, Detroit had the coldest temp on record as folks endured -21°F.
The rest of this month and into early February will be surprisingly mild with temps in the upper 30s to mid 40s.
