So, it’s 2026, and this is where we’re at now? Twerking for votes? Gross.

A Michigan congressional candidate is going viral online after posting TikTok videos that mix twerking, political commentary, and some pretty provocative content while campaigning for office.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, Shelbie Campbell is running for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, and social media has completely latched onto the “twerking for votes” angle. Honestly, how could it not? The internet practically wrote the headlines for this one.

Who Is Shelbie Campbell?

Campbell is a 32-year-old single mom, law student at the University of Detroit Mercy, and a third-generation UAW family member. She says she wants younger people in office and feels like a lot of voters are sick of wealthy politicians who can’t relate to everyday people anymore.

And honestly? She’s probably not wrong about that.

But I don’t know... shaking your booty on TikTok while running for Congress probably isn’t the way to win people over, either.

She’s also been extremely open about her past. Campbell has even posted old mugshots online herself, saying accountability matters and people should be able to grow from mistakes. Twerking for votes isn't growing in my opinion.

Shelbie Campbell's TikTok Videos Are Getting A Ton Of Attention

A quick scroll through her TikTok page shows everything from political commentary to dance videos that have people all over social media debating whether this is genius campaigning or just plain stupid. I'm going with the latter.

Campbell says she’s simply using social media to build her brand and reach younger voters.

Like it or not, people are absolutely paying attention. I mean, here we are talking about her right now, so maybe I’m the idiot. Maybe this is just what politics looks like in 2026 now. I sure hope not.

If she was simply looking for attention, well... mission accomplished. She’s getting it.
