Here We Go Again…GM Lays Off 1,300 More Workers
Here we go again.
Not long ago, we were talking about layoffs at GM’s Factory Zero plant in Metro Detroit…well, here we are again.
According to ABC 12, GM just announced another round of layoffs, this time hitting about 1,300 workers. They say it’s temporary, around 30 days, but still…that’s a tough hit.

And yeah, this is now the second round of layoffs at that same plant in 2026. Not exactly a great sign for where things are headed.
Why Is GM Laying Off Workers at Factory Zero?
It all comes down to demand…and right now, it’s slipping when it comes to EVs.
GM says it’s adjusting operations because fewer people are buying electric vehicles. Back in January, they already laid off around 1,200 workers for the exact same reason.
So this isn’t just a one-off situation.
People have been talking about this for a while now, especially after those EV tax incentives went away. Once that savings disappeared, a lot of buyers hit pause.
Gas Prices Are Rising…So Why Aren’t EVs Taking Off?
Gas prices are climbing again, so you’d think more people would be jumping to EVs. And some are…but there’s still one big problem.
Charging.
A lot of people just aren’t comfortable yet, especially for long drives or trips up north. Even around Genesee County, it still feels like charging stations are few and far between. Where are they?

Right now, it just feels like everything’s kind of out of sync.
Gas prices are climbing, EV demand is slipping, and now people are getting laid off because of it.
