Michigan May Not Be the Best State to Live Out Your Golden Years
For many people, retirement is a goal. Of course, there are people out there who want to work until they can't anymore. However, I'm one of those people who looks forward to, hopefully, the more leisurely life of retirement.
But here's the rub; will I have enough money to last me through my retirement? Heck, will I even be able to retire? These are questions that not only me, but many people ask themselves. And rightly so, "when 28% of non-retired adults haven’t saved any money for retirement and Social Security benefits replace only about 37% of the average worker’s earnings."
At the end of the day, making your dollar stretch is going to be key. And living in the right place will go a long way in helping your buck stretch. With that in mind, is Michigan the right state for you to retire in?

Best and Worst States to Retire
WalletHub recently looked at all the states to determine which were the best and which were the worst to retire in. To determine a ranking, WalletHub looked at some key factors;
- Affordability - the cost of living, tax-friendliness, the annual cost of adult day health care
- Quality of Life - share of population aged 65 or older, elderly food insecurity, access to public transportation, mildness of weather, activities & attractions
- Health Care - family medicine physicians per capita, dentists per capita, top-rated geriatrics hospitals, life expectancy
After looking at all this data, and more, WalletHub ranked the 50 states from 'best' to retire in to 'worse', and here's where Michigan shook out - 21st place. Which is just on the 'best' side of the cusp.
Michigan ranks 27th in affordability, 14th in quality of life, and 32nd in health care.
