Holiday Blues? Michigan Ranks Low For Happiness in USA
Michigan is a gorgeous state, filled with spectacular views, amazing history, and countless recreational opportunities. So why aren't we happier?
WalletHub's latest "Happiest States in America" report reveals what many have suspected all along. Michigan isn't the happy place we want it to be.
What Makes Michigan a Depressing State

When I first saw where Michigan landed on the WalletHub Happiest States in America ranking, I was perplexed. I didn't immediately grasp why Michigan residents wouldn't sing our state's praises to any pollster. Then 6 reasons immediately popped into my head, 6 undeniable reasons how Michigan can be a Debby Downer:
November, December, January, February, March, and April
What do I have against these months? Why have a forsaken half of Michigan's calendar year? How dare I insult ice-fishing, skiing, and snowmobiling season? Because on average you only get 9 to 11 days without cloud cover.
Sunlight. Lack of sunlight can dramatically affect those living in the Mitten state according to Bright Healthy Therapy
- Vitamin D deficiency: This is one of the most well-known consequences of not getting enough sun, and it's been linked to a greater likelihood of having a heart attack or stroke or developing deadly cancers. Additionally, vitamin D deficiencies can also cause weak bones, so it's important to get your daily dose!
- Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): If you live in a colder climate, you may be more likely to experience Seasonal Affective Disorder. SAD is a type of depression that occurs during the winter months due to a lack of sunlight.
In addition, a lack of sunlight also impacts your circadian rhythm, which is a fancy way of saying it screws up your sleep and eating habits. Food and sleep are two of people's favorite things so no wonder we aren't closer to the top of the list.
