You may be familiar with the term “tornado outbreak,” when weather conditions line up perfectly to spawn multiple tornadoes over a wide area. Michigan saw a nasty one earlier this spring. But now, the Great Lakes are experiencing something similar — a rare waterspout outbreak.

What Is a Waterspout Outbreak?

Waterspouts are essentially tornadoes that form over water instead of land. With the Great Lakes running unusually warm this summer and cooler air arriving this week, the stage has been set for these dramatic weather events.

Over the weekend, an astounding 25 waterspouts were confirmed by the International Centre for Waterspout Research in Toronto.

More Waterspouts Expected Through Wednesday

And the outbreak isn’t over yet. Meteorologists say conditions will remain favorable for waterspouts today (Monday, August 25, 2025), through Tuesday, and possibly into Wednesday. Forecast maps highlight large sections of the Great Lakes where the risk of waterspout development remains high.

National Weather Service Safety Guidance

While they can be fascinating to watch, waterspouts are no small danger. Officials warn they can pose serious risks to boaters and swimmers. The National Weather Service has issued safety guidance for anyone on or near the water.

Swimmers should exit the lake and seek shelter until the storm passes. Boaters are advised to move away from a waterspout’s path at a 90-degree angle. If near shore, heading to the nearest harbor until the storm dissipates is the safest option.
