Flint’s Genesee Valley Employees Fed Up After Week Without A/C
It seems trouble is brewing again at Genesee Valley Center, and this time, it's leaving everyone hot under the collar...literally.
The mall has been without air conditioning for nearly a week, and employees are taking to social media to voice their frustrations. They claim that the mall’s owners are dragging their feet, leaving both workers and shoppers to swelter in the summer heat.
Employees took to social media to vent about the fact that the Flint Township mall had been without air conditioning for over a week. Many say they have been kept in the dark about what's really going on and when they can expect some relief.
"...just called the owners of the Genesee Valley Center to complain to them about the heat and they confirmed the air conditioning doesn’t work and they’re “trying to find the parts to fix it.”
"Will the Air conditioning ever be fixed? Asking for a friend. No seriously @Genesee Valley Center"
One employee even shared a screenshot of filing a report with OSHA regarding the sweltering working conditions that seem to be going unaddressed by the mall owners. Shoppers have also shared their frustrations saying trying to shop in the mall has been unbearable.
A manager of one of the mall retailers told ABC12 that some stores have banded together to share water for employees and that it's not the mall manager, but the owners that are the real issue.
"It's just a shame that Namdar [Realty Group] does not want to fix anything and seems to be a wall that we are all banging our heads against right now," the manager said.
This is just another issue in a long string of 'situations' plaguing the mall. It was in 2022 at the height of the holiday shopping season when the mall was forced to close due to excessive flooding due to a water main break. Then again in August of 2023, the mall closed with a statement that it was due to another water main break. In February of this year, the mall closed again for 'utility issues'.
While management insists they're working on fixing the issue, some are questioning the delay. Could it be a sign of deeper issues within the mall’s infrastructure or management? Whatever the case, the lack of action is turning up the heat on an already tense situation.
