Genesee County residents are urged to be wary of door-to-door scammers posing as Consumers Energy employees.

Don Lowell tells WNEM that he let a smooth-talking man in his 30s gain access to his home when he said he was checking to make sure everything was OK with the Lowells' gas service.

Lowell says he started to get suspicious when the man was looking at his Consumers Energy bill.

“And I said, 'Maybe that ain’t true. Maybe [he] was just conning me. So then I called Consumers and I asked if they had a guy going around talking to people in my neighborhood and they said 'No,'” Lowell said.

Consumers Energy notes that they usually won't send anyone to your home for an unannounced visit and that their employees won't ask for personal information like account numbers or social security numbers. They urge residents to ask to see a photo ID from anyone who claims to be from any utility company.
