An 80-year-old Upper Peninsula man is in critical condition after being struck by an ATV while he was posting a political sign in his yard. The driver of the ATV was later found dead in his home.

The details of this story are heartbreaking - and in my opinion, proof that it's time to stop letting our differences define us and turn down the political rhetoric in Michigan (and throughout the US).

Political Unrest Strikes Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Police in Hancock, Michigan say a 22-year-old had been targeting property owners who were displaying Trump election signs as well as signage that expressed support of law enforcement officers.

The man used an all-terrain vehicle to run down an 80-year-old man who was in the process of displaying a Donald Trump sign in his yard. That man was taken to a local hospital and was reported to be in critical condition, according to WLUC-TV.

A press release from Houghton County Sheriff's Department indicates that the ATV driver contacted police, wanting to confess to the crime. He asked authorities to "send someone to pick me up."

When authorities arrived at the premises, they discovered the man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigation of Politically Motivated Crime

Police are searching the man's home for additional evidence, and will pore through his electronic devices for any additional information relevant to the crimes. The man's clothing and ATV have already been recovered.

Sadly, this case hits entirely too close to home. As we progress deeper into the political season, we encourage everyone (and will remind ourselves) of how important it is to remember that each of us is entitled to our own opinions and being respectful to others is critical.
