Imagine getting a birthday gift that turns out to be a big winner. Thanks to a bit of nostalgia, a Michigan man's gift to his dad was worth $1.1 million.

Nostalgia Leads to a $1 Million Birthday Gift

A father-son lottery club from Macomb County claimed the prize, presenting as a lottery club in order to protect their identities.

The son spoke to the Michigan Lottery, saying it was a bit of nostalgia that led him to purchase a lottery ticket for his dad at the Liquor Land party store in Eastpointe.

"I bought the ticket for my father as a birthday gift, the man said. "I don’t buy tickets often, but when I do I always buy them at Liquor Land because I remember my father always bought tickets there when I was a kid."

That Lotto 47 ticket turned out to be a big winner, nabbing a $1.1 million jackpot in the December 14 (2024) drawing.

"When my dad checked the ticket after the drawing, he had to look at it more than a few times to believe what he was seeing."

A Birthday Gift That's Hard to Beat

The father-son lottery club opted a $763,000 one-time lump sum payment, rather than an annuity for the full amount. They plan to use their winnings to pay bills and use the remainder to start a business together.
