Much like the summer of 2023, we're kicking off the season with several Canadian fires raging and hazy skies over the United States. Two years ago, approximately 40,000 acres burned in Canada from a combined 800 wildfires.

Will the Canadian Smoke in the Summer of 2025 be as Bad as it was in 2023?

As we head into the month of June, much of the northern Midwest is already under air quality alerts issued by the National Weather Service. But as the smoke from Canada makes its way into the U.S., people as far south as Georgia are being impacted.

Residents across a large portion of the country are being urged to limit their time outside, especially those with conditions such as asthma, COPD and other breathing issues. Even those without breathing ailments are being told to limit outdoor exposure.

Where Are the Current Canadian Fires Raging?

In Canada, more than 17,000 people have been forced to evacuate as of this past Saturday (5/31/2025) in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. According to Canadian officials, 'a combination of rising temperatures, winds and low humidity has spread active fires to thousands of acres.'

The Premier of Manitoba Wab Kinew said that 'this is the largest evacuation they've seen in most people’s living memory.' Needless to say this has become a major concern to our north. You can get the current status of the Canadian Wildfires by clicking here.

What will the Impact of the Wildfires Be in Michigan?

As smoke continues to cover Michigan and the Great Lakes, the National Weather Service's alert says, 'Where smoke is the thickest and reaching the surface, reduced visibilities, and a campfire smell may be evident at times. The smoke will also create air quality issues at times, mainly for sensitive groups.'

One positive note from the alert states that the 'smoke may dim the sun and create colorful sunrises and sunsets.'
