A Michigan community is mourning the tragic death of a 14-year-old who was found unresponsive. It happened Tuesday afternoon after the boy's school bus dropped him  off and he was walking home from the bus stop.

What We Know So Far

The student was an eighth-grader at Handy Middle School in Bay City. The boy who remains unidentified was found by a neighbor who immediately called 911 for help.

Despite their best efforts to revive the boy by administering emergency procedures and treatment, responders declared that he was dead at the scene.

Bay City Public Schools' Director of Communications and Family Engagement, Ben Tierney said in a statement, "This is a horrible tragedy for the family and our entire school community is heartbroken for them." He continued saying that the school district will be "providing additional counseling support for staff and students who were impacted."

Tierney also said, "After reviewing bus video footage, we can verify that the student entered and exited the bus without issue. He was last seen by the driver walking home on a sidewalk, and was later found unresponsive by a local resident who called emergency services. Our local public safety department is still investigating. We have no additional details at this time."

What Happens Next?

Police believe that foul play was not a factor and multiple local media sources report that authorities will have a better idea of what happened within a week or so. There will also be an autopsy but that won't be available for several months.
