We're not implying that you might need alcohol to survive the holidays with family - but maybe you're wondering if you can buy booze on certain holidays in Michigan.

Laws regulating alcohol sales in the US vary from state to state and Michigan has in recent years adopted new regulations which are less restrictive regarding alcohol sales on holidays.

Can You Buy Alcohol on Thanksgiving?

While a few states prohibit the sale of alcohol or limit purchases to beer and wine only, Michigan has no such restrictions. Alcohol sales are permitted on Thanksgiving Day and the day after, much like any other Thursday and Friday throughout the year.

If you're headed out of state, keep in mind that the sale of alcohol is prohibited in Connecticut, Delaware, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and Utah.

Alabama, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisana, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin all have various restrictions in place that limit the sale of certain types of alcohol.

Can You Buy Alcohol on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Michigan?

In Michigan, the sale of alcohol is prohibited between 11:59 PM on Christmas Eve and noon on Christmas Day. This means that bars that normally stay open until 2:00 AM must cease serving alcohol at 11:59 PM on Christmas Eve.

The previous law banned alcohol sales in Michigan from 9:00 PM December 24 through 7:00 AM on December 26. Michigan's new law went into effect in 2010 and also permits certain retailers that have permits to sell alcohol before noon on Sundays.

Can You Buy Alcohol on New Year's Day in Michigan?

Michigan does place restrictions on the sale of alcohol on New Year's Day, according to the Midwest Independent Retailers Association. 

On-premises licensees cannot sell alcohol between 4:00 AM and 7:00 AM and off-premises licensees are not permitted to sell booze between 2:00 AM and 7:00 AM.
