An 8-year-old Detroit girl spent the weekend in the hospital after being shot by a man who was irate because he couldn't get anyone to give him a cigarette.

Keri Philson tells WDIV in the video below that she was taking her daughter Kaya to school when she stopped at a gas station. The gunman, 21-year-old Damond Reeves was going on and on because no one would give him a smoke and began firing in a random fashion.

"She was in shock and the next thing you know, she was screaming, 'Mommy,'" Keri said. "I took her coat off and wrapped it tight in her sweater because the blood was going everywhere."

Police reviewed surveillance video from the area and were able to locate and arrest Reeves shortly after the incident.
